What exactly is a defining moment? Perhaps Whitney Houston sang it best for the 1988 Olympic Games when the iconic lyrics gave us one of the most inspiration songs of an era, “One Moment in time.” The bible uses two different Greek words to describe, “time.”
Secondly there is, kairos, It refers to the right or opportune moment. The Supreme Moment. While chronos is quantitative, kairos has a qualitative, permanent nature.
It’s that moment when the nurse says, “It’s a boy!” It’s the phone call in the middle of the night. It’s when the doctor says, “You have cancer.” A defining moment is that Kairos Moment, that split second in time when you realize life will never be the same again.
My friend Bryan was only 29 when he was still groggy from an emergency surgery. He didn’t even know that the surgeon had removed 22 inches of his colon and now had a colostomy, when the doctor said, “You have stage III colon cancer.” Without missing a beat, he looked at the man who had saved his life and simply stated, “My Jesus is bigger than cancer.”
THIS WAS A DEFINING MOMENT
Life was not without it’s up’s and down’s during his treatment that was marked with side effects and surgeries. But he was right… Jesus is BIGGER than cancer! and 12 years later, he is still a healthy testament to that truth!
How will you react when you come face-to-face with your defining moment? Matthew 12:34 says, “…Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” There is no way to determine what your future holds. But you can prepare yourself for that next Defining Moment. The wisest man who ever lived tells us in the Book of Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Your reaction to that moment may help you ride the wave rather than being knocked down by the wave.
Surround yourself with those who encourage you, read words that bring you knowledge, and listen to things that strengthen your soul.
